 Over the course of this 90-minute generative writing workshop, participants will engage with various writing approaches, experiments, and prompts centering the creation of new and unexpected works. Looking to other artistic forms and utilizing methods deployed throughout the creation of Hannah Kezema’s This Conversation Is Being Recorded (Game Over Books, 2023), participants will investigate their own sense of/relationship to documentary poetics, thinking through erasures, collaborating with unconventional materials, and exploring the spectrum(s) of truth and its relationship to writing/creating/thinking/being in a capitalistic world. Let’s find the garden in the machine, together.

It’s an Old Story: Retellings in Poetry

A retelling tells a familiar story again, in a different way. Think every iteration of Cinderella you’ve ever seen or read. Or Romeo and Juliet. Or Pride and Prejudice. Most of the stories we know are familiar extensions of each other: a hero, an obstacle, a lesson. Poetry, however, is different from fiction, in that it doesn’t have to move a plot forward and it certainly doesn’t need to offer a reader a resolution. Poetry allows both readers and writers to plop into narratives half-finished or already over. In this workshop, we’ll explore the tradition of retellings in both western and eastern traditions. We’ll also take up the task of navigating multiple perspectives, the original characters, their reimagined twins, and the judgment of the writer (you!). The ultimate goal of this workshop is to draft new work that combines multiple retellings in one piece.

Metaphors & Other Language for Mental Health in and out of Religious Community

A 90-minute workshop that will analyze the ways in which metaphor is used to explore mental illness and struggle especially in relation to religious communities. Participants will examine poems from Maya Williams’ recent debut collection, Judas & Suicide, to get a sense of how metaphor is used to openly engage with a complex human experience like suicidal ideation. Throughout this workshop, participants will be asked to contemplate their own metaphors for mental illness, discuss how language around mental illness appears in religious community, and begin writing a poem that speaks to personal feelings on mental health.  Participants should be wary in advance that this workshop will deeply and openly discuss the topics of mental health, suicidal ideation, and religious trauma/community, so please be aware of that prior to registering for the workshop.
